Another new hire has joined the Lansdale Police Department.

Borough officials welcomed new officer Daniel Talbot, who swore his oath before family and friends in mid-May.

“We need to find good people, not good cops. We can teach pretty much anybody how to be a police officer, what we can’t teach people is how to be decent human beings,” said police Chief Mike Trail.

“Getting the right people to come here to serve this community is of the utmost importance to us,” he said.

Police staffing levels have been a hot topic in town since 2022, when the police chief asked for several new hires to keep up with the population growth of the town, planned retirements, and help tackle quality-of-life issues like parking and traffic troubles. Four new police hires in early 2023 brought the department up to a recent high of 29 officers, before another round was authorized in fall 2024 due to departures and retirements, and in mid-January the chief asked for another hire to replace another retirement.

Council and the public met that new arrival on May 21: Talbot is a lifelong North Wales resident, the chief said, who graduated from a Philadelphia charter school, then enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a military police officer, while earning a criminal Justice degree from Chestnut Hill College, and most recently graduated from the Temple University Police Academy.

After the new officer received his oath from Mayor Garry Herbert and his badge from his family, the chief thanked council for their support.

“Our screening is designed to bring out the best of the best, and I think we’ve done pretty well with Officer Daniel Talbot,” Trail said.

Lansdale’s borough council next meets at 8:30 p.m. on June 4 and the public safety committee meets at 6:30 p.m. that night, both at the borough municipal building, 1 Vine Street. For more information visit www.Lansdale.org.
